Jessica Wade, the star midfielder for Aland United and Banyana Banyana, confirmed to ShakingInk that she will be out of action for at least six weeks after undergoing Achilles surgery.
The season's top Hollywoodbets Super League midfielder joined Finnish Aland United from JvW Girls Football Club earlier this year. Wade said she has been playing through pain since March, and the pain was unbearable, then decided to go for an operation. Though the doctor has estimated a six-week absence from action, the Johannesburg-born star remains hopeful that she will recover sooner.
"Unfortunately, it had been a bit of a nuisance for a while, but all the scans we initially had done didn’t show anything that explained the pain. Towards the end of March, however, it reached a point where it was no longer manageable, and that’s when we really started searching for more answers. Thankfully, my orthopedic surgeon was able to identify the problem during surgery.” Said Wade.
With her absence from contact action confirmed, Wade says her focus is now on her recovery, as she is determined to work on her rehabilitation and match fitness. Wade is relieved that the doctors were able to detect the major issue and operate on her Achilles after several scans.
The procedure went well, and the recovery timeline is encouraging, so my focus now is simply on doing everything possible to recover as quickly and safely as possible. it was a relatively small procedure that involved removing scar tissue and trimming a portion of the muscle.
I’ll be working hard with my medical team over the coming weeks and pushing myself to get match fit. I’ll be taking the necessary time to recover properly, but based on what my orthopedic surgeon has told me, I’m optimistic about being back to playing in six weeks." Confirmed Wade.

As the Women's Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) approaches. Jess, as Wade is affectionately known in her circle, reveals that representing South Africa at the tournament has been in her mind during the process and was emotionally shattered by the timing of her operation. She promises to help Banyana Banyana throughout the competition and hands over the selection process to coach Dr. Desiree Ellis.
This has obviously been at the forefront of my mind throughout the entire process. I’m devastated by the timing because representing South Africa is always a giant honor, and I wanted nothing more than to be part of the squad. Ultimately, selection is Coach Des’ decision, and I have complete respect for whatever decision is made. Right now my job is to recover, get back to my best, and then whatever happens from there is out of my hands. I’ll be supporting the team every step of the way and wish them nothing but success at the tournament." Concluded Wade.
