Kutumela: It Will Kill The Competitiveness Of The League

By Malose Wa Ga Lamola

Christina Kutumela, TUT Matsatsantsa coach and former captain, opens up to ShakingInk about her journey in football, from playing the game to leading from the dugout. The Thabazimbi-born mentor also shared her views on the newly two-stream format in the upcoming season.

Though many believe that switching from playing to coaching is a smoother transition, Kutumela says that is not always the case. Former TUT Matsatsantsa skipper says she had to develop a new set of skills than those she possessed as a player.

"The transition from being an athlete to coaching can never be an easy task to do; there's emotional shift changes of identity, like I had to separate myself from the role that used to define me for years. — Mental shift as well, where I had to let go of “I'm the best” to find fulfillment in athletes' development.I had to learn to manage high expectations, where I had to try not to expect the athletes to possess the same passion, dedication, and  skill I had or those in my era had." Clarified Kutumela.

Kutumela has been under the guidance of coach Sizwe Sibiya for quite some time. Having played under Sibiya before serving as his second in command in the technical team hierarchy, Kutumela says Sibiya had a considerable impact on her growth as a coach.

"His philosophy challenged my existing beliefs; it broadened my perspectives and skillsets. I grew to be a holistic coach (player-centered), viewing players as individuals first and athletes second." Said Kutumela.

Hollywoodbets Super League will be played in separate streams in the upcoming campaign. Coastal teams will play separately from the inland-based outfits. Kutumela believes this will diminish the competitiveness of the league, and probably women's football will never turn professional.

"No, because the level of competitive football will be dropping. This basically shows that women's football will never be professionalized. This might cause a very negative impact on players development. It will cause social separation and diminish the enjoyment/fun of the game."
