Mthandi: We Are Not Tested Enough
By Malose Wa Ga Lamola
Nonhlanhla Mthandi, a Mamelodi Sundowns Ladies and Banyana Banyana midfielder, spoke with ShakingInk about missing out on the Hollywoodbets Super League midfielder of the season award to Jessica Wade, as well as the challenge TS Galaxy Queens and JvW Girls Football posed to The Brazilians last season.
Mthandi, also known as 'Gaddafi' in her inner circle, was one of the top performers in Banyana Ba Style's half-dozen title-winning season. Her efforts earned her a nomination for Best Midfielder of the Season. Mthandi lost the accolade to Banyana Banyana colleague Jessica Wade, who has since moved abroad to join Finnish club Aland United. Mthandi believes Wade deserved the honor because she was essential in JvW Girls Football's second-place finish in the log standings.
""I was delighted to be nominated for the midfielder of the season award. Being nominated against the greatest midfielders in the Hollywoodbets Super League was a privilege. I lost to Jessica Wade, the top player. She has since gone to Finland to represent the country. That demonstrates how good she is." Said Mthandi.

Mamelodi Sundowns Ladies is the only team to have won the Hollywoodbets Super League title. Creating a team to beat. 'Gaddafi' challenges the corporate community to come on board and provide financial support to help other teams compete. Mthandi argues the lack of a cash injection means Sundowns Ladies opponents have a difficult time challenging the Chloorkop-based side.
"Honestly, we haven't been tried enough. Because some clubs are struggling financially or players aren't fully dedicated. We are frequently tested when we play African teams in COSAFA and the CAF Champions League. We need to encourage business companies to become involved, and maybe we'll get some competition." Mthandi said.

Mthandi contributed to Banyana Banyana's 2-0 victory over Morocco, bringing the 2025 calendar year to a successful close. Mthandi and clubmate Noxolo Cesane's goals were sufficient to defeat the Atlas Lionesses. With the WAFCON approaching, Mthandi is certain that South Africa can improve on its fourth-place position from the last edition and challenge for gold.
"Preparations for the upcoming WAFCON are proceeding smoothly. We have already secured our first victory in the COSAFA tournament. With the competitive squad we have in camp, I am confident that we will perform well in the WAFCON event. And we'll come back with a trophy." Mthandi elaborated.
