In a post-match interview with the SABC on Sunday afternoon, Durban Ladies coach Siphephelo Makhaye praised his team for turning the tide and winning all three points for the first time after six games without a victory.
In the course of a week, Durban Ladies played Tshwane teams back-to-back. They faced the University of Pretoria in their first test at Hatfield Stadium, where they lost to the AmaTuks 1-0 in a close game. Makhaye blamed the inconsistency of his team on the loss of the core players each season.
"I am happy with the progress of the team. Looking at their age. A very inexperienced side, but they are adapting to the league and hopefully next season they will be ready, because that is what we are preparing for." Makhaye told the public broadcaster.
A week later, when the eThekwini-based team faced off against Tshwane University of Technology Matsatsantsa, Lady Luck was on their side. Makhaye was a relieved man after defeating TUT Matsantsa 3-2 in a thrilling five-goal match.
"We thank God. We thank the almighty. We needed that win. To boast the moral of the girls. They are working hard. Though, there are still those mistakes. They are still young. They are still growing. I have said it before that this is a relatively young squad. I am glad they came out with a win today. They really deserve it." Said Makhaye.
A fiercely contested triumph wasn't without its setbacks, as Durban Ladies' star player Nonsimiso Mkhaliphi sustained a serious head injury. Makhaye is optimistic that the injury is not as severe as it initially appears.
"Eish, I am still going to check how bad it is. But since she had to come off, it is bad. Because she is not one of those sulking players. For her to come off means it is serious. Losing her will be bad because it will also affect the structure of the team. Losing a player of his caliber. We know she is a team player, hardworking, and she fights for every ball. But we will soldier on." Makhaye concluded.
